Visit the finest temples - Lingaraj, Rajarani, Mukteshwar, Brahmeshwar and Parasurameshwar. These temples are some of the best specimens of the Orissa temple architecture.

Puri is one of the most important pilgrimage centre for the Hindus. The renowned Jagannath temple built in the 15^th century AD and crowned with Vishnu's wheel and flag dominate the landscape at Puri. The temple with its elaborate carvings and mouldings are very fine examples of Orissa architecture. (Non Hindus are not allowed)

At Dhauli Hills visit the Ashokan Edicts. On top of the Dhauli Hill, near the ancient rock edict is a Peace Pagoda (Shanti Stupa).

The beautiful Sun Temple built in the 13^th century in honour of the Sun God, contains exquisite carvings, life sized lions and elephants, colossal figures of warriors on horses, scenes of battle and chase - all carved with great imagination and skill, testify to the high standard of ancient Indian, art and engineering skill.

10 kms west of Bhubaneshwar are the Udaigiri Caves, which were occupied by the Buddhist monks as early as the 2^nd century BC.

Both these are Buddhist sites. At Amravati, the remains of the Buddhist influnence in the Satavahana period include majestic carvings, chaityas, Viharas, murals and panels. At Nagarjunakonda, the excavated ruins of a Buddhist settlement date back to the second and third century BC.

In the north-east of the state, 250km from Calcutta and 320km from Bhubaneswar, this park covers 2750 sq km and is part of Project Tiger. There are tigers (thought to number around 80), elephants and several types of deer among the many species here. The scenery is beautiful and varied, with hills, waterfalls and undisturbed forest in which the wildlife manages to remain well hidden. The park is closed from July to October.
