It is reputed to have been part of a
vast kingdom during the epic period of Mahabharata. The miracles by the astrologers of the
city's Nabagraha Temple (Temple of the nine planets) emanate an aura of magic. Another
reason for Guwahati's charm can be its being the ancient 'Kamrup'- the birth place of
Kamdeva, the God of love. And there certainly is the current magic of glorious sunsets
viewed from the Bhubaneswari hills which turn the rippling Brahmaputra from

SUALKUCHI |

Also across the river from Guwahati, 32km away, Sualkuchi is a famous silk-weaving centre best known for its muga silk which is naturally golden-coloured, not dyed. Endi and pat silks are also woven here, and prices are lower than in Guwahati. There is a regular ferry across the river and bus several times daily. |
