KAZIRANGA

Situated on the south bank of the Brahmaputra river, Kaziranga National park is famous for the stronghold of the armoured one-horned Indian rhinoceros.

GUWAHATI

It is reputed to have been part of a vast kingdom during the epic period of Mahabharata. The miracles by the astrologers of the city's Nabagraha Temple (Temple of the nine planets) emanate an aura of magic. Another reason for Guwahati's charm can be its being the ancient 'Kamrup'- the birth place of Kamdeva, the God of love. And there certainly is the current magic of glorious sunsets viewed from the Bhubaneswari hills which turn the rippling Brahmaputra from gold-to-orange-to-crimson.

Guwahati houses the capital of Assam, Dispur and is a hub of industry and commerce. It is also a window to the wide spectrum of ethnic tribal cultures and a great wealth of forests, flora and fauna. Popular historical places are Kamakya temple atop Nilachal hill and the Shiva temple on the island of Umananda. Other centers of religious and archaeological interest such as the temple of Nabagraha and Basista as well as of Janardhana. The State Museum is a must for visitors. You can also visit Sulakuchi silk-loom. Hajo Pua-Mecca mosque, the Hayagriba Madhave Temple, Madan Kamdev.


MANAS

Manas Wildlife Sanctuary, now a tiger reserve under project tiger, is located in the north Kamrup of Assam. Three rivers viz Manas, Hukua and Beki, provide a glorious panorama of nature. SIBSAGAR

Sibsagar was once the capital of the Ahom rulers who dominated Assam for more then 600 years.This city's main feature is the water body from which it gets its name: a 257 acre tank, that is at a higher elevation than the rest of the town, with three temples on its banks- Shivdole, Vishnudole and Devicol. SUALKUCHI

Also across the river from Guwahati, 32km away, Sualkuchi is a famous silk-weaving centre best known for its muga silk which is naturally golden-coloured, not dyed. Endi and pat silks are also woven here, and prices are lower than in Guwahati. There is a regular ferry across the river and bus several times daily.
